Destination Focus: The Flinders Ranges

One of the world’s oldest mountain ranges lies deep in the heart of South Australia, and is surprisingly accessible from the fast pace of the city. The Flinders Ranges is an area of geological significance, and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including the once-rare yellow-footed rock wallaby.

Dotted throughout the vast ranges are tiny towns and settlements, from delightful Melrose nestled at the foot of Mount Remarkable, to Parachilna with a sweeping view of the jagged ranges. Remnants of once-grand sheep stations tell the tale of the harsh environment and shattered dreams.

Wilpena Pound is the best-known landmark of the Flinders Ranges, and is comprised of a natural amphitheatre covering almost 80 square kilometres. St Mary’s Peak is the highest point of the ranges at 1170m.

The Flinders Ranges provides a stunning backdrop for cycling and walking. The Mawson and Heysen Trails run for several hundred kilometres through the ranges, providing scenic routes for cyclists and walkers.

The Adventure Collective, together with Ecotrek, provide a range of walking and cycling experiences through the Flinders Ranges in 2008.

Flinders Ranges and the Heysen Trail
Experience a selection of the most interesting and scenic sections of the Heysen Trail in this tour, walking with daypacks and returning each afternoon to soft beds, hot showers and good food. Highlights include Wilpena Pound, historic Blinman, and the ruins of Kanyaka Homestead. This is the landscape that inspired Hans Heysen, one of Australia’s best known landscape artists.

80 Years of Flying Doctors

For the past 80 years, remote communities and rural areas of Australia have received emergency medical care and health services delivered by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The development of the Inland was in many ways made easier by the presence of the Flying Doctor. Previously, serious illness or accident often meant death and the Inland holds many graves of people who might have lived had they been able to receive medical aid quickly enough.

The late Sir Robert Menzies, Former Prime Minister of Australia 1939-41 & 1949-66, once very aptly said that the Flying Doctor Service represented the "greatest single contribution to the effective settlement of the far distant back country that we have witnessed in our time..."

The RFDS was the first comprehensive aerial medical organisation in the world and to this day remains unique for the range of primary health care and emergency services it provides and for the huge area of sparse population and climatic extremes over which it operates - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Adventure Collective’s Managing Director, Peter Solly, knows first-hand how crucial the Flying Doctor Service is: “Having spent three years living and working in one of the most remote communities in Australia, in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands, I relied on the Flying Doctor Service for our radio communications to the city. But more than this, during my time in the lands, my youngest daughter decided she was going to come into the world very prematurely. We had to drive three hours to the closest night runway and rely on the Royal Flying Doctor to come in and fly them to Alice Springs. The Flying Doctors were great. I’m pleased to say that my daughter is now 16, and a wonderful, budding actor.”
